Stephen Boyd in Carter’s Army (1970), aka Black Brigade

Stephen Boyd only did a handful of TV movies and pilots during his career. This one, Carter’s Army, particularly stands out as an excellent one with a great cast. He stars with Robert Hooks, a young Richard Pryor and also Billy Dee Williams of future Star Wars fame in a very interesting WWII drama about an all black company assigned to protect an important strategic bridge in Germany. It was most likely filmed in  the mountains of southern California. Boyd plays Carter, the Captain assigned to the mission, as a Southern bigot from Georgia who slowly comes to appreciate the men under his command. It came out as the ABC TV Movie of the Week on August 4, 1970.  This is a great role for Stephen, and it gives you a little insight into how excellent he would have been as a TV mainstay. But Stephen had other plans, and he would soon be off to Europe for an extended time to make movies in Spain, South Africa and Amsterdam.
